Just on the west side of Paris is the area defined as “La Defense“. This is a major business district of the Paris Metropolitan Area and of the Ile-de-France region. The area is broken into 4 distinct zones: (1) The Triumphal Way, (2) La Defense, (3) A Forest of Towers, and (4) Grande Arche de la Defense.

The great Canadian architect Frank Gehry designed the amazing Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. His designs have been highly scrutinized to the point where people claim he just crushes a soda can and tosses it to the floor to inspire his designs. I find those comments to be absurd and disrespectful towards a genius who is actually doing something new and interesting rather than spitting out the same old boxes with the same old details just to fill our world with routine garbage. Look at the buildings of ancient time and then compare what they did to what we do today…it has almost no comparison with the exception of works of art like a Gehry design.

The building structure outlay of Prefecture de Paris et d’Ile-de-France is a jewel in the landscape. It is filled with various business operations departments, so going inside is not an option for the regular public. The exterior is enough to see some amazing forms that literally transform the landscape.

Behind Prefecture de Paris et d’Ile-de-France is the Parc Andre Citroen, which contains a hot air balloon named the Ballon GENERALI de Paris, a pair of greenhouses, and some angled green spaces broken up by waterways.

Next we made our way down to Montparnasse Cemetery. Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beavoir reside in this beautiful cemetery. It is located near the very popular (and thus always lined up) catacombs.
