Singapore – City Sights & Food

– JUNE 29, 2015

We have shifted gears and decided to hit Singapore before Malaysia.  After going through Indonesia for 40+ days, we need to go somewhere that is a bit more modern.  Singapore may be a small nation on the map, but they truly have their act together.

In fact, littering in Singapore will result in a fine.  Failure to flush a public toilet will result in a fine.  You cannot purchase chewing gum in Singapore as they outlawed it to avoid chewing gum on the walls of their subways.  This is the cleanest city I have ever seen and I sincerely appreciate it.

This is a restaurant.

The signs to find this place were terrible. Once we found it we realized it was called “Laundry Nowhere”…how appropriate.

Now we will concentrate on the food in Singapore.  Yeah, you could walk the poorer streets and find the same warungs as in Indonesia (and still question to yourself why these people have to eat yellow rice at every darn meal)…but we were a bit tired of the same rice and noodles meals every time we eat.  We will instead focus on the higher end food situated at the Marina Bay Sands hotel (more on that in the next post).

We went to Mario Batali’s restaurant named “Osteria Mozza“.  It was an amazing experience.  I had the duck special which came on a bed of dark lentils.  The combination was simply mouth-watering.   Jill had the vegetarian pizza, which was a hot pizza with cold mozza on top (fresh mozza made right there in front of the guests).  It was one of the best pizzas we have ever tasted.

We had tried to go to Gordom Ramsey’s restaurant, but they told us it was booked for the next 3 weeks.  The restaurant was open and 75% empty when we went there, but the hostess was adamant they could not seat us.  I walked by 2 hours later and it was still 75% empty…I wish Gordon knew about this, as I imaging he would prefer his restaurants to make money rather than send people away.

As we walked through the hotel campus we saw this little coffee shop which had a kick-ass dessert menu.  Check them out below.

The Marina Bay Sands hotel had a coffee shop with some great desserts. We had the caramel bread pudding and peanut butter chocolate cake with a couple of huge caramel coffees.

In the main area of the Marina Bay Sands hotel there is a restaurant which has a lunch & dinner buffet spread.  Its an all-you-can-eat event where people come and sit there for 3 hours or longer.  You pace yourself so you can try everything on the menu at least once.  They have everything you could possibly imagine or ever want (even yellow rice if you feel so inclined).

The food in Singapore (the high end anyhow) was as awesome as you could imagine.  We also ate in the regular stall food places, but that kind of food has been blogged about in Indonesia before.  Singapore has been a breath of fresh air for sure.
