Sledging: To surf down a river on a small floating bumper car.
The Kiwi’s are famous for creating new words to describe their adventure activities and this is one of them. It’s not really surfing, nor is it swimming.
You are fitted with rafting gear and put onto what I can only describe as your own personal floating bumper car. It will help you stay afloat while roaring through Grade 3 rapids! Not big rapids, but they are big enough for our first river sledging.

Learning the ropes in the kiddie pool. (I am in the pink helmet..yes baby pink…naturally it fit the best and Ken has the yellow bumper car)
You can stalk people from behind…haha!
There are spaces where you are resting and floating and preparing for the next rapid. This section of the Kawarau River has few middle stream obstacles (like giant rocks) and it is quite deep so it is perfect for floating down.
We tried not to bunch up but it happened a lot!
The views were awesome floating by shear cliffs.
The big eddies are fun as you lift your car vertical and let the whirlpools spin you.
It’s difficult to tell but those white waters near the rock on the left that people are riding are 3-4 foot high waves!
Excellent fun. Good-times. Good-times.
